Easter 2023

Dear Neighbor,

As Easter approaches, if you choose to reflect on the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, I invite you to consider how angels were part of these events.

When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane, an angel was there with Him. Jesus prayed in the garden, knowing He was about to be arrested, convicted, and crucified. As it says in Luke, “there was seen by Him an angel from heaven strengthening Him” (Luke 22:43).

When the women who knew Jesus came to His tomb on the third day after His crucifixion, angels were there. We learn in Matthew that “the angel of the Lord, descending from heaven and coming, rolled away the stone from the door, and sat on it” (Matt. 28:5).

Scripture teaches us that there were angels inside Jesus’ tomb as well. In John, it says Mary saw “two angels in white sitting, the one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain” (John 20:12). In Mark it says there was in the sepulcher “a young man sitting on the right, arrayed in a white robe” (Mark 16:5).

Just as an angel gave strength to the Lord Jesus, angels are with us when we need help too. And just as they were with Him when He rose from the tomb, they are with us as we wake up to eternal life as well.
