Day 4: February 27

Readings:

And when they drew near unto Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sends out two of His disciples, and says to them, Go into the village opposite you; and straightaway going into it, you shall find a colt tied, on which no man has sat; having loosed him, bring him. And if anyone say to you, Why are you doing this? say ye that the Lord has need of him; and straightaway he will send him here. And they went and found the colt tied at the door outside, where two ways met; and they loose him. And some of those who stood there said to them, What do you do, loosing the colt? And they said to them as Jesus had commanded; and they let them go. (Mark 11:1-6)

To “ride upon a donkey” was a sign that the natural was made subordinate; and to “ride upon a colt the son of a she-donkey” was a sign that the rational was made subordinate.... From this their signification... it pleased the Lord to do this.... The reason of the representation was that the natural man ought to serve the rational, and this [in turn] the spiritual, this [in turn] the celestial, and this [in turn] the Lord: such is the order of subordination. (Arcana Coelestia 1781:8-9)

Reflection:

The symbolism of the Lord riding on a donkey is that the human rational should serve the Lord. Submitting the rational to the Lord means subordinating our wants and ideas about what is right, to the Lord. What is an area where you could submit your life to the Lord?
